For an end-of-summer vacation with an emphasis on relaxation and engaging with nature, check out our budget airfares to these botanical treats.

In the northeast, The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens homes the must-see Niagara Garden Trail. Meandering along the banks of the Niagara River and featuring many floral attractions, this is the ideal getaway for the receding summer days. With the thundering Falls, and the tourist hub of Ontario nearby, the gardens are a welcome slower pace. Take time to wander through the world-famous rose garden featuring over 2,400 roses. Children will love to visit the Butterfly Conservatory, complete with butterfly garden, ponds, and an arboretum. There are vast parklands several hundred acres wide containing plants and flowers of all kinds. The park and gardens operate year-round, and admission is free.

Slightly further south is the United States Botanic Garden (USBG) in Washington D.C The main facility is The Conservatory which is made up of several rooms, each controlled for humidity, light, and temperature to ensure the plants are as close to their natural habitat as possible. Included in this impressive collection of rooms are: the Garden Court, Rare and Endangered Plants, Plant Exploration, the Orchid House, Medicinal Plants, the Desert, the Oasis, the Garden Primeval, Plant Adaptation and the Jungle, and the Children's Garden, enough to satisfy the greenest of fingers. Entry into all public areas of the USBG is free.

The University of British Columbia (UBC) houses Canada's oldest continuously operating university botanic garden. Spreading over 100 acres, and housing 8000 varieties of plant life, the UBC botanical gardens are a welcome treat for any Vancouver visitor. The gardens include an alpine garden, medicinal and food gardens, and an Asian garden. The UBC also maintains the Nitobe Memorial Garden, one of North America's most authentic Japanese Tea Gardens. The garden includes a rare authentic ceremonial Tea House. Visiting the garden year round yields different views, though around September you can expect the visual treat of the maple trees turning golden. Admission is $10 and includes the Nitobe Memorial Garden, children under 18 go free.

Nestled in the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon, the Portland Classical Chinese Garden is an authentically built, Ming Dynasty style garden. This oasis of tranquil beauty was built by Suzhou artisans in the year 2000, to signify the twinning of Portland and Suzhou. Covered walkways, bridges, open colonnades, pavilions and a richly planted landscape frame Zither Lake, creating unique views at each and every turn. The admission prices are usually under $10, and free to children under 5.

Portland is also home to the oldest public rose gardens in the United States. The garden boasts spectacular views and more than 8,000 roses. Stop by and enjoy the sights and scents of one of the most popular of Portland’s attractions. Admission is free to the public.

These gardens are deliciously warm in the late summer to early autumn months, and are a great retreat for travelers looking to relax. Be warned, with beauty at every step and our great airline rates, it may be hard to wander back.
